Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

I recently moved to California, from Texas, if you didn’t know.  But I bet you do know (or have maybe heard) that everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes closet spaces.  I’ve gone from a huge walk in closet to a sliding door closet with one hanging bar.  I know, first world problems. Anyway, I have for a long time worked on living a minimalist-ish life.  With the decrease in closet space, I knew that the easiest place to start was my wardrobe.

I’ve wanted to create a capsule wardrobe for years, because truth be told, I much rather prefer a simple life, but I love fashion!  I am sometimes consumed by it!  Lately, I haven’t really cared much.  I think I got a glimpse of my need for clothing as I was packing, unpacking, and unpacking some more, and found a number of items that still had price tags!

I knew that building a capsule wardrobe would be a task but I’m up for the challenge, and I’m starting slow and small.  Working a capsule wardrobe means more time for things that really matter, and less time making decisions on frivolous things.  Truthfully, the majority of my morning routine is deciding and “un-deciding” what to wear for the day.

First, let me explain what a capsule wardrobe is.  It’s a compact wardrobe made up of staple pieces in coordinating colours–usually around 30 items or fewer, including shoes and sometimes even accessories.  These pieces are timeless classic pieces, that can transition from season to season, year after year.  That is the original idea of a capsule wardrobe, but things have changed especially with our need and desire to have STUFF.  I can only hope that one day I can get to 30 items or fewer.

Let’s do this together.  I’m new to this and will need your help just as much as you’ll need mine.  Join me in the Spring Wardrobe 10x10x10 Challenge.  10 outfits, 10 days, and 10 items.  The challenge will start on April 18th, for 10 days, weekdays only.  I’ll post steps and instructions here.

Phase I

The first phase to get us started is 3 fold:

  1. Purge your closet the best to your ability – this may take some time, so grab some tea or wine, crank up some tunes and get to work!
  2. Pin away – Create a Pinterest Board of Spring wardrobes that catch your eye.  Use this as a guide to streamline your style/preferences and choose looks that are similar to items you already own.
  3. Shop your closet – Really push yourself to not purchase any new items for this challenge.  Use what you already own.  The goal is to minimize and ultimately save some coins.

These first 3 steps will help to get us started.  I’ll be back next week to share what I’ve done and provide the next steps to prepare us for the challenge!

Personal Style Tip:  White tee shirts are staples!!  Grab a few with the perfect shape, fit, and neck and build an amazing wardrobe from it.

Good luck, y’all!
