Passion Planning

Hey guys,

It’s been a long time!  The last time we spoke, I told you I would be giving a couple of helpful organization tips here and there.   Well, today I’m going to tell you about something that really helps me stay organized and most importantly productive.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a thing for planners. Yes, a paper planner! I know that sounds weird, especially being in the digital age and all, but I have found that having something tangible really helps me. People ask me all the time why I don’t just put everything in my phone. Well, oddly enough, I only use my phone to make phone calls. I really don’t use it for much more than that on a consistent basis. I have found that actually being able to put my hands on my planner helps me. This may not be for everyone, but as I stated before, it works for me.

With all that being said, I have to tell you about this amazing planner that I have. It is called The Passion Planner. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Did I mention it is amazing? This planner was created by a young female entrepreneur who saw a need for it and filled it. The Passion Planner isn’t just any old planner. It goes well beyond setting up appointments and staying on schedule. It also helps you set goals and keeps track of them throughout the year. At the end of each month, there is a section that allows for reflection. Being able to sit down, reflect on my month, and see if I have taken any active steps towards achieving my goals is very powerful. It helps to hold me accountable. My Passion Planner has increased my productivity in the last two months that I have had it. Because my weekly schedule tends to be pretty busy, I set aside time each weekend to sit down and plan out my week. Being able to see what I have ahead of me keeps me mindful of how I should spend my time. Now, I don’t want you to think that every hour of my day is spent working or staying busy. I definitely find time for all of the fun things, but in addition to those, there’s work, afterschool activities for the kids, as well as chores that must be completed regularly. My planner is essential to my every day functioning. I could go on and on and do a whole commercial on the Passion Planner, but instead I’ll just leave you with the website so that you can check it out for yourself. Remember to check them out on Instagram and Facebook.

In some way, we all probably use some form of a planner. It may be on your phone, it may be with a couple of post-its, you may even be one of those people who can remember EVERYTHING (yeah right)! As long as what you are doing is working for you, that’s all that matters.

Until next time,

SEPTEMBER // 16 // 2015

I love great food!  I’m starting to realize that I prefer to cook great food in the comfort of my own kitchen (well, when I get my own kitchen), as opposed to spending the extra money dining at a restaurant…….every night.

As many may relate, I have a few “go to” recipes that always get the job done when I can’t think of anything else, or in a time crunch, which typically consists of anything salmon related.  I mean, I have recipes stashed away, but who has the time when you can simply put salmon in the oven, season it with salt, pepper, and olive oil, topped with lemon juice, add a side of asparagus, and call it a wrap!

Truth be told, I am very interested in adding more recipes to my recipe app, and learning cooking tips and techniques.  When writing the 101 goals I strive to achieve in 1001 days, I included attending a cooking class, which I am proud to say that I booked, paid, and attended.  We cooked (and ate) recipes from Trisha Yearwood’s cookbook, Trisha’s Table, which was included in the cost of the class.

Location: Williams-Sonoma, River Oaks

In Attendance: Myself, My Sister Friend (Mythicktofitdiary), and a few other older women.

Sweet-Pea Burgers – This burger is an excellent option for the non-meat eaters.  If you have kids, or adults, who prefer not to eat Sweet Potatoes if they are not topped with tons of sugar and marshmallows, then this is a great way to sneak this super food in their tummies. Topped with avocado, you can’t go wrong.

Gwen’s Cole Slaw – I have always stood firm in the fact that I DO NOT eat coleslaw.  Even though I’ve never eaten a bite of it in my life, I could not be persuaded, and by the way, I love cabbage.  Crazy, I know. Some things about me cannot be explained.  Don’t question it, just go with it.  Anyway, because I paid for this class, I decided to give it a go, and turns out the slaw was not too shabby.  So good that I made it for a potluck at my church, buuttt I got a little heavy handed on the relish.  Better let next time, though.

Lemon Poppy Seed Cake – This recipe is probably by far the best cake I have ever had!  The secret is to indulge right out of the oven.  Nice and warm.  Yum! I baked this cake for my church’s pot luck and baked muffins for my mom, for convenience, she says. Lol

If you ever have an opportunity to partake in a cooking class, I strongly encourage you to attend.  This class will not be my last.

Happy Eating, Y’all

SEPTEMBER // 13 // 2015 (But Really September 11. smh)

Soooo, I’m late, once again, story of my life, BUT…

Football season is finally here!!  Hoo-Ray!! I’m a huge football fan and records show that the percentage of female football fans is on the rise!  Kudos to the NFL for hiring the first female official, Sarah Thomas!  Girl Power!

Whatever your reason is for devoting your Sundays to football frenzy, after church, of course, let it be known!

For my Four Friday Faves, I’m giving you the top four NFL teams on my list.  With 32 teams in the NFL, this list is not scored solely on the team, itself.  I had to throw in a few more determining factors, such as food, fashion, city, etc… Get into it!

4. San Francisco 49ers

The Niners, as Faithful 49ers fan name their home team, are not the faves to win much of anything this season with the number of changes in staff and roster, but that doesn’t stop me from putting them on my #4FF.  First of all, Levi’s stadium is amazing and has been praised for its technological advancements and environmental sustenance, such as a 27,000 square foot “Green Roof” on the top of the stadium’s suite tower. In addition, the employees/ushers are probably a few of the best dressed Stadium employees I’ve seen in the NFL.  Secondly, the team is located in the Bay Area of California.  I mean, who doesn’t love the Bay!?  Great weather, fresh seafood, Union Square, Full House, and Riley Curry! Did I mention that the 49ers has THE SEXIEST player of all 32 teams? Hey Colin! ♥

3. Green Bay Packers

What makes the Packers a fave for me?  Aaron Rodgers, Mr. Discount Double Check, himself.  In the words of Stephen A. Smith, he’s a baaaaadddd man! Who wouldn’t be with a successor like Brett Favre?  Green Bay’s A.Rod is exciting to watch and you can’t help but to cheer for him. Not to mention, the Packers fans are the shareholders of the team, for a cost, of course.  The main purpose of community ownership is to ensure the team stays in Green Bay.  In my opinion, this makes for faithful fans!  Oh and ummm, Who doesn’t like cheese?

2. Houston Texans

Houston is the 4th largest city in the country and the place I call home.  I could NOT create a list of this sort and not show my city love!  Houston has arguably one of the best defenses in the league led by the town celebrity, Defensive End JJ Watt.  He’s everywhere!  Ironically, I’ve never bumped into him in these H-Town streets!  Come to Houston and experience the Southern Hospitality you’ve heard so much about.  Houston makes for a great place to raise a family, hit the town and most importantly EAT until your heart’s content!  With the city being  the most ethnically diverse large metropolitan area in the country we are sure to have a variety of food choices!  Our traffic sucks, but that’s because more and more people are moving here due to the low cost of living.  In case y’all forgot, Houston created Beyonce. H-Town stand up!

Back to football….

Don’t be fooled, the Texans have a few pieces of eye candy on the roster, as well. Hey JJ and Arian! #BullsonParade

  1. Dallas Cowboys

So, let’s get one thing straight, I may live in Houston, but I’m a Cowboys fan.  Let’s all remember to Respect the Star!  #WedemBoys The Cowboys have the best wide receiver in Dez Bryant.  Never bet against Dez.  Not only does Dez Bryant occupy the Cowboys’ roster, but the offensive line is the toughest and probably the best in the game.  In 2014, Romo was gifted an average of 2.84 seconds in the pocket! Although DeMarco Murray is no longer on the team, the Boys are not lacking in offensive threats.

Not to be shown up by Levi’s Stadium, AT&T Stadium formerly known as Cowboys Stadium and affectionately termed Jerry’s World, is not to be second guessed!  The stadium seats 85,000, making it the largest stadium in the NFL by seating capacity, with the standing room making a total of 105,000.  Jerry’s World has the fourth largest high definition video screen, which hangs from 20-yard line to 20-yard line.  The end zone screens are not too shabby themselves which can be seen from the parking lot!

Lest we not forget, Neiman Marcus was founded in Dallas, TX and it’s headquarters is located in Downtown Dallas! The most important of them all…..

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Please keep in mind that my faves have little, yet enough, to do with football, and there are a dozen other teams that can easily be considered as a Friday Fave, depending on the week!

Which teams are your favorite?  Who will you root for this season?

PS – If  you are looking for some trendy football gear to put on for your city, check out Alyssa Milano’s line, Touch.  You’re welcome!

by Erika Johnson

Hello everyone. My name is Erika Johnson and I have a confession: I have a serious love affair with all things pertaining to organization. As a mother of two young kids I am constantly trying out new methods of organizing my kids’ rooms and play area.

It began about two years ago when my kids were 2 and 1. Yes, 2 and 1! I quickly realized the kids had so many things that needed to be organized. Gone were the days of a neat and tidy house, or so I thought. It wasn’t enough to gather their toys and dump them out of eyesight. Something had to be done, but what? I began buying books and checking social media sites for home organization tips. I was instantly hooked. I decided that I would begin a full scale attack on my home. It seemed that everywhere I looked, I saw a need for improvement.

After giving my kids’ playroom a complete overhaul, I saw that when everything is in its place, things tend to run much smoother. My kids are now 4 and 3 and yes they do make a mess here and there, but it is that much easier when it’s time for them to pick up their things because of the system I have in place.

Whenever I take on a new task of organizing, it allows me to tap into my creative side. It allows me to think outside of the box. It’s amazing how many things we may have lying around our homes that can be repurposed for something else.

I began speaking to fellow school teachers about this love affair. As I learned tips, I shared them. We all want our classrooms organized and fully functioning. When you have a limited amount of space, organization is key. I have since began organizing for others. From bedrooms to junk drawers, I’ve organized it.

While we want our homes and offices organized, what about our day-to-day schedules? We have to make sure that we are as productive as possible during the time allotted. I mean, we have all used the saying, “There aren’t enough hours in the day”. Well, the next time we “meet”, I will be sharing little tips that have, and still continue to help me; from home organization to daily planning.

Talk to you soon,
